Dental Sealants
A good diet and proper oral hygiene like brushing after meals and flossing daily are essential for preventing cavities. However, despite our best efforts, sometimes these preventative measures do not always work. Teeth are full of deep crevices and sometimes toothbrushes cannot always reach these, particularly in your back teeth. That's where dental sealants come in to help prevent cavities in these hard-to-reach spots.
Dental Sealants are made of a special resin material that bonds into the grooves of your teeth. This creates a barrier against food particles, plaque, and acidic foods and drinks to protect a tooth from potential cavities. According to the American Dental Association, dental sealants have been shown to reduce the risk of decay by nearly 80% in molars.
Sealants are suitable for both children and adults and provide the needed protection for teeth that would otherwise be susceptible to cavities. Actually, the earlier you get the sealants, the better protection they offer.
The procedure is quick and painless. One of the Drs. at Greg L. LaVecchia, DMD will place a gel on your tooth to allow the tooth and sealant to form a strong bond. A special light is then used to harden the sealant. Sealants can last up to 10 years before needing to be replaced.
